On-campus auditions will be held in April for the Drumline, Colorguard and Coquettes. Steeped in rich tradition, the 350-member Carolina Band, the University of South Carolina’s marching band, is one of the nation’s premier college bands.
The university's athletic programs have earned eleven national team titles and produced many Olympians. Tim Brando was quoted as saying, "You won't find any more loyal fans in the country than those who follow the South Carolina Gamecocks." All eight of Moorhead's victories in 2018 had to be vacated after 10 football players were reprimanded by the NCAA for academic misconduct involving a former part-time tutor and an online chemistry class. South Carolina will have sixteen returning players on offense, nine on defense and two on special teams that started games in 2017. South Carolina started out the 2017 season with a win over NC State in the Belk Kickoff Game 35–28.
at Kentucky
After that season, South Carolina, along with fellow SEC member Kentucky (the only other SEC member with varsity men's soccer), moved that sport to the Sun Belt Conference. Women's beach volleyball competed as an independent before joining the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association for the 2016 season (2015–16 school year). South Carolina rugby offers scholarships to certain athletes of up to $60,000 over a four-year period. The rugby team is supported by the Carolina Rugby Foundation and by the Carolina Men's Rugby Endowment Fund. “The Mighty Sound of the Southeast” performs powerful, exciting and entertaining music designed to reach a wide-ranging audience.
Most recently, the Gamecocks won the 2017 NCAA East Regional Championship, reaching the Final Four for the first time in school history. Lamont Paris is the current head coach, and the team plays at the 18,000-seat Colonial Life Arena. The University of South Carolina was a member of the Southern Conference for men's basketball and football from 1922 until it became a founding member of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1953. USC then competed as an independent until 1983 when it joined the Metro Conference for all sports except football and men's soccer. In 1991, the Gamecocks joined the Southeastern Conference when it increased its membership to 12 schools and split into two divisions.
Women's track and field
Given that garnet and black were already in use and also the dominant colors on a gamecock, the university gradually adopted "Gamecocks" and "garnet and black" as the official nickname and colors for its athletic teams. This season marks the Gamecocks 125th overall season, 27th as a member of the SEC, and 3rd under head coach Will Muschamp.
South Carolina's out of conference opponents represent the ACC, MAC, SoCon and Sun Belt conferences. The Gamecocks hosted three non–conference games which are against Coastal Carolina of the Sun Belt, Akron of the MAC and Chattanooga of the SoCon. South Carolina traveled to archrival Clemson of the ACC for 116th annual Palmetto Bowl to finish the regular season.
Preseason All-SEC teams
Muschamp has led the Gamecocks to 15 wins and 11 losses over his first two years, tying Steve Spurrier, and Joe Morrison for most wins in the first two seasons as a Gamecock head coach. On December 6, Offensive Coordinator Kurt Roper was terminated after offensive struggles. Co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon served as the offensive coordinator for the Outback Bowl win against Michigan, and was promoted to permanent offensive coordinator to replace Roper. Werner has previously been on Ole Miss, Miami, and Alabama's coaching staff. The two institutions are separated by just over 125 miles and have been bitter rivals since Clemson's founding in 1889.
Since joining the SEC, the Gamecocks have been part of the league's East Division. "Garnet and black" have been used by the University of South Carolina as its colors ever since the family of J. William Flinn presented a banner composed of those colors to the football team in November 1895, although there was no official adoption of the colors at that time. In 1900, the football team was first referred to as the "Gamecocks" by The State newspaper. The nickname was a reference to the fighting tactics of General Thomas Sumter, the Revolutionary War hero known as the Fighting Gamecock.
Founded in 1967, the University of South Carolina rugby team is the oldest club sport at the school. The team plays Division 1 college rugby in the Southeastern Collegiate Rugby Conference against its SEC rivals. The rugby team finished second in the SCRC conference in 2013 and reached the national playoffs. The team improved and finished first in the SCRC conference in 2014, again qualifying for the national playoffs. South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp will enter his third-year in 2018.
The final exam schedule is designed for full semester length classes. The University Registrar establishes the official calendar followed by the University of South Carolina system. New woodwind and brass players interested in joining the Carolina Band must submit a prescreening audition video. Review of videos begins April 3, 2023, and notification of admission begins April 10, 2023. Submissions continue to be reviewed throughout the spring and summer, and auditions continue to be accepted as space permits.
Students in the Carolina Band represent nearly every college and school on the USC Columbia campus, with numerous Honors College students and Capstone Scholars. Having marched for over a century, it continues to entertain fans, serve the university and community, and provide students with an outlet to represent the very best of what the University of South Carolina has to offer. The Gamecocks had three players at five positions selected to the preseason all-SEC teams. Founded in 2015, the South Carolina Club Baseball team competes in Division 1 of the National Club Baseball Association. The team finished first in the South Atlantic Conference's Eastern Region in 2020 and 2022. In 2020, then-school president Robert Caslen recognized the team, and pledged to host an ice cream party for the team as a reward for sweeping rival Clemson University in a two-game series in Columbia.
In the following game vs Kentucky, star wide receiver Deebo Samuel broke his right fibula, and would miss the remainder of the season. After close losses to Texas A&M and Kentucky, South Carolina defeated 3 SEC schools in a row; Arkansas, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt. After a hard-fought 24–10 loss to rivals #1 Georgia on the road, South Carolina defeated Florida 28–20 finishing 5–3 in SEC play good enough for 2nd in the SEC East.
The Gamecocks were originally scheduled to face Conference USA opponent Marshall on September 15, but this game was cancelled due to Hurricane Florence. South Carolina continues to develop rivalries with other members of the SEC's East Division. South Carolina's main SEC rival has been the University of Georgia due to its proximity and the many years of competition before the Gamecocks joined the SEC. The "Halloween Game" against the University of Tennessee has the potential to be a big football game every year. Another notable rivalry within the East Division is the Gamecocks' men's soccer rivalry with the University of Kentucky. The only two SEC members that sponsor varsity men's soccer have played in the same conference since 2005, first in Conference USA and now in the Sun Belt Conference, with their games known as the SEC Derby.
A heated rivalry continues to this day for a variety of reasons, including the historic tensions regarding their respective charters along with the passions surrounding their athletic programs. The 2020 football game did not occur due to scheduling amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, but the rivalry is scheduled to continue for the 2021 football season. Their baseball programs consistently qualify for the NCAA playoffs and frequently earn berths to the Men's College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. Men's soccer continued to compete as an independent since the SEC does not sponsor men's soccer, but joined the Metro Conference for the 1993 and 1994 seasons and competed in Conference USA from 2005 to 2021.
